Welcome to our greatest NFL players of all time page where we break down the all-time greats by position starting with the offensive positions, moving on to defensive players and ending with punters/kickers. Each position has been given it's own article along with some analysis of why we think each player makes our list. Please note that this article was written in 2013 and may not refelct recent retirees worthy of making the grade. We'll try to update these articles annually to keep the information current! Enjoy!
Best Quarterbacks of All Time – Putting all “fanhood” aside, is there really any question who the best signal caller of all time is? It's most definitely Joe Montana, but will Tom Brady unseat his reign on this title which has held up for the better part of the last 20 years? Time will tell!
Best Running Backs of All Time – Many aren't old enough to have seen or appreciate Jim Brown's field prowess. For those that have been cheated, lemme summarize his career for you. HE DOMINATED. There, I think you get it! An argument can be made here though. Barry Sanders was by far the most exciting to watch as he tap danced like no other, often times disappearing into thousands of pounds of linemen, only to pop out, hit the corner and bust off a long gainer. His style of play was unique and leaves one wondering if they'll ever see anything like his style of play ever again in their lifetime. And then there's “Sweetness”. The class of the league and a guy that got so much respect that many feel he should head this list.
Best Wide Receivers of All Times – Is there really any question to who should top this list? If your first thought isn't the great Jerry Rice, you're probably a kid who never saw him play. Rice was iconic, automatic, sleek, solid, dependable, oh, and sick! I'd be surprised if we ever see another player of his stature at the WR position. Our number 2 guy is a fella you may have never even heard about, but surprisingly, his 99 touchdowns were the record for almost 50 years before Steve Largent came along.
Best Tight Ends of All Time – This position didn't become a major part of passing offenses until the NFL was almost 20 years old. During my 30+ years of watching the NFL, I believe Kellen Winslow wins top honors here.
Best Defensive Linemen of All Time – Reggie White heads our list because frankly, he was a men amongst boys. Who better to fill the number 2 spot than the Secretary of Defense, Deacon Jones, who was one of the most feared players in the league. Check out Loot's take on the rest of the top 10!
Best Linebackers of All Time – I could have gone top 100 with this list! It's so debatable because there have been so many greats to play this position. Big hitters, ball hawks, run stuffers, etc, so many worthy of mentioning! While my list is debatable, I think that we can all agree that no LB was more feared or effective than Giants great Lawrence Taylor.
Greatest NFL Coaches of All Time – Our top 10 list is led by Vince Lombardi. They named the NFL Championship trophy after him. I think that ranking is pretty indisputable. Check out the rest of Loot's top 10!
